Barcelona

ASA in Barcelona is designed for students who have had at least two years of high school Spanish and combines the advantages of a Spanish immersion and a pre-college program. All students receive an ASA transcript and UAB certificate after the program.

Students are divided into 3 or 4 different levels of Spanish language ability and receive 3 hours of language instruction and a high level of individual attention each day. All classes are taught by UAB faculty and emphasize innovative teaching methods and utilize a curriculum specifically designed for ASA students. Students have full access to the latest in audio-visual equipment as well as the university library and computer lab.

Morning language classes are complemented by afternoon cultural electives, which meet three times a week. The workshops are an opportunity for students to get a deeper insight into Spanish history and culture.

Spanish Cinema

Spain has a rich, well-respected film tradition, which receives much critical acclaim. Spanish cinema provides a fascinating and lively insight into Spanish culture and life. In this class you will have the opportunity to view and analyse works by acclaimed directors such as Almódovar, Saura and Amenábar.

Ideas and Cultures of Spain

The return to democracy in 1975 made Spain one of the most modern and vital countries in Europe but also revitalized strong nationalist sentiments, particularly in the regions of Cataluña, and País Vasco. Through readings, film and music you will discuss how Barcelona and Catalans view themselves and how cultural elements shape today's Spain.

20th Century Spanish Art & Architecture

Through a combination of discussion and field-based work and visits, this course will introduce students to three of the most significant and influential artists, Picasso, Miró and Dalí, and the architect Antoni Gaudí. Their philosophy and unique vision changed 20th century art and architecture and continues to influence the generations of today.

Spanish Literature

An introduction to Spanish literature, representing different historical periods designed to acquaint students with significant works in preparation for AP Spanish literature. We will look at works by Federico García Lorca, Gabriel García Márquez and Antonio Machado. Instruction is in Spanish. For students with at least 3 years of high school Spanish.

International Relations

This course examines the European Union (EU) emerged and its role in world affairs. The course will look at positions taken by EU members with a focus on Spain. Examine worldwide challenges such as ongoing hostilities in Iraq and the Middle East, tensions with North Korea and Iran and recent conflicts in Afghanistan and the key issues in modern international relations. How do Spain and European nations differ from the US in their approach to international conflict? Are we growing further apart in how we see the world and where is the common ground?

International Business

How do large international corporations such as GE and Google make business decisions? This course looks at differences in consumer taste, competition in the digital age and the changing face of business in a globalized world. You will learn and critique basic theories of international business with a focus on successful Spanish corporations such as Banco Santander, Zara and Iberdrola.
