Take Action

ASA's LSC curriculum will focus on the four keys to leadership and civic engagement: knowledge, analysis, persuasion, and implementation. Dynamic faculty will lead lively discussions, engaging classes and practical workshops to help you channel your enthusiasm into a real plan for action.

Knowledge: Understanding Global Issues
Explore several major challenges we must confront in our increasingly complex, interdependent world in this discussion-based course. Keynote speakers will address a range of topics, spanning local, national and global issues. Use case studies, class discussions and group projects to gain a greater understanding of how we as a global society came to face the difficulties we see today. Topics covered may include environmental concerns, economic disparity, poverty, health care and education.

Analysis: Creative Thinking & Problem Solving
Can you analyze a complex problem and craft a realistic solution? Join a small team of your peers and work collaboratively to identify issues and create solutions. You'll benefit from the expertise of an ASA faculty advisor as you construct your plan and present it to the larger group.

Persuasion: Effective Leadership
Learn and practice the critical leadership skills you'll need to inspire others - including public speaking, conflict resolution, and teambuilding strategies - in this dynamic, hands-on series of workshops. By the end of the course you’ll have a better understanding of your personal leadership style and how to continue to develop into the leader you want to be.

Implementation: Your Social Action Plan
With guidance from experienced ASA faculty, you'll identify an issue that is meaningful to you and work step-by-step to develop a detailed plan for a project you can implement in your home community. Learn how to write a project proposal and present it to a critical audience, prepare an operations budget and develop a marketing strategy so that you can return home with a detailed plan in place, ready to make a real difference as a leader for change in your community.
